If i had to recommend one of the older ones to play first go right to BG2 Throne of Bhal. If you dont like reading, you are not going to like these games, as they are heavy in dialogue, that needs to be read to appreciate the story. If you are not use to playing these older games, the graphics are going to look poor to you, but you will forget about that in 10 minutes of playing, as the story, characters and exploration is so great. This makes it tons of fun though and when you finally get it, its very rewarding, especially when you get to the loot the bodies and spend the next 15 minutes swapping inventory and equipping new items.fun fun and more fun!! You end up doing some encounters five, six.ten times before you find the right combination of spells/counter spells and match ups to defeat your foe. To OP, a lot has already been said, but to add to it, the biggest thing about these games is the strategy involved in order to get through major fights or even minor ones for that matter. I swear that took me hours to get through! Great adivce here - i think i had 10 different save points when i was in the mind flayer lair in the sewers. (To Hit Armor Class 0 basically your chance to hit your enemy).Ī spell caster that is hit with any kind of damage, has a chance to fail his cast.Īlso those older games don't auto save very often. Read up what stat's your character class needs. I don't know what you know about 2th Ed AD&D but the most important thing are. Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale are both extremely beginner unfriendly.Įspecially Badurs Gate can get you at the beginning in one hit death Situations. Originally posted by Tomato Juice:One world of warning. This really added spice since Baldur's Gate had static loot, you're always going to find the same exact stuff in the same exact locations. You could open a chest and find a Heroic War Axe or a Dagger +1. The one major thing I liked Icewind Dale over the other games for was the randomized(to an extent) loot. Which can be good or bad depending on your taste. The problem with this is that you aren't going to have alignment issues or have to worry about how your choices affect your party members. Therefore Icewind Dale is more "open ended". However there was very little character interaction since you generate your entire party and go from there. Icewind Dale on the other hand had a solid story and cool characters. The only problem I had was the characters, they just didn't interest me as much.(Except for the Tiefling "succubus" girl and Morte) Planescape Torment comes in a close second for story, it was really amazing and very different for it's time. I'd choose Baldur's Gate 1 and 2(with Throne of Bhaal expansion) simply because of the story, characters and character interactions. Personally, if I had to choose to play only one game. Provided you like playing those types of games. However, each one for those games you listed should be gotten and played IMO. Pillars of Eternity seems like a modern version of Baldur's Gate so I'm cautiously optimistic. From the videos I've watched and commentary I've heard about this game. With that said, it's going to come down to preference. The Beta was basically a tech demo, you could only go so far, interact with X things and find Y stuff. The problem is that not even the backers "know" what this game is going to be like.
